May 2010 The Consultant Pharmacist feature article "The Business of Pharmacy: Alive and Kicking for Aspiring Entrepreneurs", Shelly Spiro was interviewed for the section of the article stating on page 300 "Shelly Spiro: Networking for Success" the aspiring pharmacy business owner has many questions to ask and answer such as (1) What services will you provide?, (2) How will you put together contracts and agreements?, (3) Do you need a business license?, (4) What types of insurance will you need?, (5) How will you communicate with clients on a regular basis (how will you invoice them), (6) How much will you need and be able to charge for services? The article continues to quote Spiro "It is extremely important for pharmacists to understand the value of their time....More than anything else, you have to understand your market and how you will capture it. You have to conduct a market analysis. It's not enough to be good at what you do."

HIT is expected to provide integrated electronic health care with interactive exchange among patient, providers, government agencies, and insurers, resulting in an increase in the overall quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery with fewer medical errors, increased administrative efficiency, decreased health care costs, and expanded patient access to affordable health care. Government incentives are in place in an effort to expedite the nationwide implementation of HIT. http://www.pharmacytoday.org
Jan/Feb 2010, JAPhA - 50:1 - Jan/Feb2010, pages 4-7, American Pharmacists Association,Association Report. "Role of health information technology in optimizing pharmacists' patient care services", by Rachelle F. Spiro, Jean Paul Gagnon, and Alison R. Knutson. Health information technology (HIT) and the use of computer information systems in pharmacies is nothing new to the profession. As the health care industry begins to aggressively adopt the use of electronic health records (EHRs), pharmacists in community pharmacies are often viewed as advanced users of technology. For pharmacists to provide medication therapy management (MTM) to optimize outcomes from medication, they must have access to the information contained in patients' EHRs that are maintained by other health care providers, including pharmacists in other care settings, and the information contained in patient's personal health records (PHRs). http://www.japha.org
